Monochromatic Straight Dancer 1, an original painting by Joe Don Brave.
I started a monochromatic series in the Fall of 2025, pulling a color out of a bag and seeing what I could do with it. I have danced in the Osage Traditional dances, The I-lon-skha, since I was 13. These dances happen during the month of June, in three districts of the Osage Nation, Grayhorse, Hominy, and Pawhuska. I descend from all three districts, but when I entered the dances, I was "put in" in Hominy. June is the most important time of the year for the Osage, it's the time we all come together to enjoy family and friends! So I paint it often, and this is one example.
